Sephi Bergerson

Who am I?

My name, if it isn’t obvious already, is Sephi Bergerson and I am a documentary and lifestyle photographer based in India since 2002.

I was a commercial photographer in Israel for more than ten years before moving to India in early 2002 with my wife, our 10-months-old baby, four bags and very little money, to follow my dream to be a documentary photographer.

I only got into wedding photography when I started working on my book; ‘Behind The Indian Veil – A Journey Through Weddings in India’ (To be published in 2015) in October 2007. Working on this book I have arguably witnessed and documented a bigger variety of Indian weddings than any other person on earth.

I am sure it is much more interesting to know that I started getting bald at twenty-three so decided to shave my head. I keep a small French beard because I feel the white hair makes me look distinguished. I’ve always been a trekky. My Mac is called Locutus of Borg. When I bought my first digital camera I had to sell my film camera as I needed money. I love Italian opera. I used to tend bar in the village in NYC in 1987. Drove a Kawasaki KZ750 across the US from NY to Vancouver and down to San Francisco. I am a hard core Rolling Stones fan. I Love the desert and going camping. I’m pure vegetarian. Love company but enjoy solitude. Can’t fit into boxes. Always engaged in a long-term personal project. Consider a stand-up comedy gig. Enjoy food and cooking although it doesn’t show. I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world and am still in love with her (most of the time) even after more than seventeen years. We live in an old Portuguese villa in Goa and have three amazing girls at home.

I am available for a small number of wedding photography assignments every year. I devote extreme care and attention to each couple with whom I work and get to know you as a friend. I work with you to develop photography services that will truly reflect who you are as a couple and what your day will be.

I most definitely look forward to hearing from you.

I wanted to say thank you so so so very much for capturing our wedding ever so beautifully! These memories will last a lifetime and everyone who has seen the photos have said nothing but extremely wonderful things. I hope that in the future we will be able to see you again! ...We are expecting our first child and is due in a couple of weeks! Perhaps for our children's wedding, we can have you over!! Once again, thank you very much for the absolutely wonderful memories you have given us. Wishing you all the best and more!

The photos were amazing. I cant thank you enough. Nobody in my family can stop talking about the pictures. They all want “high-res” pics. A phrase most of them were not even aware of till a few months ago. They all seem to have become extremely “Photo-Literate” ever since you showed up blank Client Letters. Every time I am about to visit people they want me to make sure i bring my laptop and pictures on a USB drive. I looked at the pictures on a 46 inch LCD screen. It looked like people would start jumping out. Its like reliving the most important day in my life over and over without the stress blank Client Letters

I cant tell you how grateful I am that you agreed to do this for us even though I couldn’t really afford it. I really hope i can make it all upto you someday. More than the pictures, I feel like thanking you every time I see Shruti looking at the pictures. It makes her so happy. I really do owe you big time. Please do let me know if there is anything I may be able to help you with.

It will probably take me a while to pay off all my wedding debt, but all I have to do now when I am worried is look at the 800 or so wonderful pictures that you shot at our wedding. I hope we were able to do everything to make your time with us bearable.

Not sure if i will see you again (I do have a lot of brothers and sisters who might be getting married sooner rather than later), but it was an absolute pleasure.

“Hi Sephi – Thanks for the Birthday wishes, and for the photo, great present! Just got back to the UK. it was a complete dream – first Incredible India, and then the Maldives! Such a pleasure to meet you, thank you for all you did for us. You are someone at the top of your game, great to see. Some of our family and friends have been asking about you too, saying they thought you were brilliant – the way you were shooting, how you took control, the whole thing. Hope all is well with yourself and your family in Goa, look forward to catching up soon. All the best – Nilesh”

“Hi Sephi, I got the dvd on saturday just like you said, and was actually waiting for the party on the 27th (last weekend) so I  could get the reactions of more of the guests! We all absolutely loved the photos!! The sequence of photos of, for example, Guntur and Saskia were so funny…we were all teasing them about it…haha…the best part is that many of the guests were like wow, when did he take that photo, I didnt even realize that…I’m glad though, because most of the girls are used to giving “photo smiles” as soon as they see a camera pointed at them, so it was cool to see real smiles…amazing shots of me and Mirek during the photoshoot…with the vegetable-seller and on the ducks… haha The wedding shots were superb, and I also loved grandpa’s pics, you can literally see how passionate he was about his speech! I think I could appreciate your photos much more now after receiving photos from all the guests, cos the colors and sharpness makes the photos so much more realistic….so we could re-live the nice moments again :) Thanks Sephi, you really did some magic ;) Love and hugs, Madhu”

“Dear Sephi, Alex and I were looking at our wedding pictures again the other day, and it was as though we were actually there, back in time again. We love the pictures, everyone looks so good, and the colours are just amazing. We have two of the pictures up on the wall here in our home in Bombay. We want to thank you for being a part of our wedding (both our weddings, actually), and tell you again how much we appreciate the fact that you could be there. We couldn’t have asked for anyone better. Everyone who saw the pictures were really impressed…we’ve been asked several times who our photographer was :) Some relatives of ours told us you were featured in the Marie Claire magazine, and we bought it to see :) Cheers, Varshini and Alex.”

Some frequently asked questions

How much do you charge?
Wedding packages start at 1.8 lakh for a ten-hour day. Special packages for Monsoon weddings between April and September. All payments are in Indian Rupee (INR) according to the exchange rate on the date of payment.
What are your payment terms?

A booking fee/retainer of one Lakh is due to reserve your date. This retainer is payable by a few different methods: International TT transfer,  PayPal, direct bank deposit or Western Union. 50% of your balance is due 90 days before your event with the final amount due two weeks before the wedding. If booking under thirty days before the wedding the entire contract amount is due at the time of signing.

I know a photographer that charges less then you. Can you match that?

A wise man once said that photography is not a commodity. “A commodity is anything for which there is demand, but which is supplied without qualitative differentiation across a market no matter who produces it. In other words, Coper and rice are coper and rice. Stereo systems, on the other hand, have many aspects of product differentiation and the more valuable a stereo is, the more it will cost.”
— WIKIPEDIA Driving a Hyundai is not like driving a Lexus. I am proud of being able to give you the “Presidential Suite’ of service and quality of work. I believe in value for money and you have my assertions that the final images will stand above the competitors. However, if you have a smaller budget I will be happy to send one of the capable photographers working in my team to your event. Please contact us for more details.

I also need a videographer. Can you help me?

We work in association with two highly professional teams of cinematographers who are very experienced in Indian weddings. I am happy to quote for videography if you feel you need and want a film of your wedding done.

I want a wedding album. Can you quote for that?

While I do not include wedding photo albums as a part of my regular packages I will be more than happy to help you create a truly stunning one. Our wedding albums are produced to the highest standard in the industry. Each album is hand made and printed on fine-art museum-quality archival paper that is guaranteed to last at least one hundred years. Leather bound, the album comes in a custom album box to create an amazing keepsake to hold your wedding images for generations to come. Please let me know and I will be happy to send you more information.

What will I receive from you?

My photography service always include the following: 1. Photography service for 10 hours on the wedding day 2. All travel expenses for the photographer, excluding accommodation. 3. You keep the final images on DVD You will own “home use rights” to your images which means that you can do pretty much anything you want with them as long as it doesn’t generate any income for yourself or the people you give them to. Find out all the details in the contract. The images you receive are all color corrected and optimized, print-ready high resolution files good enough for any high-end glossy magazine.  An average set will range from 500 images for a small wedding to 2500 for a large wedding. You will get a DVD set with a HighRes folder with all the images and another folder with all the images in low resolution, ready for use in email or be uploaded to you Facebook or flickr account. All the images I shoot at your wedding are backed up in the most reliable and sophisticated back-up system and will stay secure with me in case you lose the DVD I sent you.

How long will it take you to deliver my pictures?

Time frames can range anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on the time of the year and my schedule. The average delivery time is usually two to four weeks but can sometime take more. In any case, delivery of the final DVD will be less than 60 days from the time of your wedding.

Which cameras do you use?

It is really not the camera that creates the image but the person holding it. I use the latest and best equipment that I need to create the magic that you expect me to create. The famous American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway once met the legendary photographer Irving Penn at an event. Ernest Hemingway: “Good pictures, what camera do you use?” Irving Penn: “What typewriter do you use?” Please feel free to contact me for more information and I will be happy to answer.
